Suicidal subject barricades self in Lecanto, later taken into custody

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, patrol units with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office responded out to 1245 West High Acres Street in Lecanto in response to a report of an armed, suicidal subject.

Subsequently, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were deployed to assist.


Upon arrival at the residence, patrol deputies encountered the armed subject who was directed to drop his weapon. After not complying with officer’s instructions and raising his firearm, deputies utilized their tactical training to neutralize the threat.

The subject was shot and injured, however still proceeded back inside the residence. Other individuals were inside the home when shots were fired, but were safely removed by responding units. CNT members negotiated with the barricaded subject for nearly two hours, and after the extensive and intense negotiation, the subject eventually exited the residence to surrender.

He was then taken into custody without further incident and transported by helicopter for medical treatment. Fortunately, no deputies or citizens were injured during this incident.

“The constant and rigorous training of our patrol deputies, SWAT and CNT members was certainly evident today,” said Sheriff Prendergast. “We are extremely thankful that the occupants inside this home are safe and that this individual poses no additional threat to the members of our community.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating this incident, as protocol for any deputy involved shooting. CCSO is cooperating with FDLE and will be assisting with their investigation. Once updates are available, additional information will be released to the public.
