Illness temporarily closes county animal shelter

Citrus County Animal Services has temporarily closed the shelter, until further notice, due to an unknown highly contagious upper respiratory infection.

The shelter medical staff and administration have consulted with Veterinarians from the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program who are experts in the field of treatment and management of illnesses in shelters.

Samples were immediately collected and sent to the lab for testing, but results have not yet been received. Currently, all animals in the shelter are receiving medical supportive care and strict isolation protocols have been implemented.

The shelter veterinarian will continue to work with the Veterinarians from Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program to ensure the animals in the shelter are receiving the most up-to-date care as possible. As the situation develops, shelter administration will continue to provide updates.

During this time, animal owners are especially encouraged to keep close tabs on their pets and ensure they have some form of identification with their current contact information. This will help keep as many animals out of the shelter as possible.  If you are missing an animal, we encourage the public to visit our website www.citruscritters.com as updates will continue to be made in an effort to minimize an animal’s stay in the shelter.
