Armstrong appointed head of SWFWMD

The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board appointed Brian Armstrong as executive director at today’s monthly Board meeting.

Robert Beltran, who announced his resignation earlier this month, will stay on temporarily to assist in the transition.

Beltran was appointed to serve as the District’s executive director in September 2013, and is returning to the private sector.

County grapples with fire funding

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday voted 4-1 to proceed with the creation of a special taxing district to help fund fire services in the unincorporated portion of Citrus County.

The Inverness City Council on Monday voted to no longer participate in the county's MSBU, which helps fund personnel and equipment for the county's fire service, which falls under the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

Cyclist, 15, dies in Homosassa accident

The Florida Highway Patrol said on Tuesday that a teenage cyclist and a car collided on U.S. 19 in the mid-morning hours near West Cypress Boulevard in the Sugarmill Woods area.

The FHP accident report said that Clayton T. Storey, 15, of Homosassa was bicycling south on U.S. 19 along the outside apron, north of West Cypress Boulevard.

Sheriff's Office works site of possible traffic fatality

TCCSO-Logo320he Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday morning issued a traffic alert to county residents.

The accident may have resulted in a fatality.

The alert was issued for the area of U.S. 19 from Cypress to Cardinal. The CCSO said it was a "bad accident" on the Sheriff's Office facebook website.

"There was a bad accident and the South bound lanes are completely shut down," the CCSO said. Residents were asked to avoid the area and to use alternative routes, especially in light of extremely slow-moving traffic.

PSC approves Duke's nuclear spent-fuel storage plan

Duke Energy's closed nuclear power plant in Crystal River, Fla.

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) on Dec. 18 approved Duke Energy Florida’s (DEF) request to construct a fuel storage facility at its Crystal River Nuclear Unit 3 (CR3) to hold existing spent nuclear fuel during the plant’s decommissioning.

“After analyzing several options, on site dry cask storage proved the most efficient and cost-effective method to safely store CR3 spent nuclear fuel,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham.

“We will continue to ensure that all costs associated with the decommissioning project are prudent and necessary,” he said.

Lecanto man charged with sexual battery

A Lecanto man is facing a sexual battery charge that is said to have involved a 17-year-old girl.

Arrested on Saturday was Martin Michael Allen, 28.

According to the arrest report, the girl contacted a counselor, who eventually the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. The girl alleged that Allen had given her alcohol and then had sex with her.

Deputies interviewed with the girl, who told them Allen had done this on two occasions.
