Voters decide political fates

Citrus County voters joined others throughout the state on Tuesday to cast votes for the Aug. 28 primary to establish party winners for national, state and local offices.

Locally, the Supervisor of Elections reported that voter turnout was 34.58 percent. The county has 107,891 registered voters. Of that number, 37,309 ballots were cast

Citrus County numbers lead the vote counts in the tallies below. Those numbers are followed by statewide counts.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Rick Scott (R) easily won over Roique “Rocky” De La Fuente (R). The count was 89.67 percent for Scott (20,873 votes) and 10.33 percent (2,404 votes) for De La Fuente.

In the race for governor and lieutenant governor, Ron Desantis (R) outdistanced his nearest competitor, Adam Putnam (R). Desantis won 54 percent of the vote (12.635 votes) to Putnam’s 39.57 percent (9,147 votes).

On the Democrat side, Citrus County voters picked Gwen Graham (D), who took 44.35 percent of the vote (4,600 votes). Her nearest rival was Philip Levine (D), who took only 18.94 percent of the vote (1,964 votes).

In statewide voting, DeSantis garnered 909,213 votes to Putnam’s tally of 588,489 votes on the Republican side, while the top vote-getter for the Democrats was Andrew Gillum, taking 51,993 votes, while Gwen Graham received 468,730 votes.

In the state attorney general contest, Ashley Moody (R) outdistanced Frank White (R). Moody won 55.30 percent (12,365 votes) to White’s 44.70 percent (10,011).

In statewide voting, Ashley Moody (R) bested Frank White (R) by a margin of 875,354 votes to 606,077 votes. And Sean Shaw (D) won with 1,012,764 votes to Ryan Torrens’ 362,847 votes.

Coming in firest for state commissioner of agriculture was Baxter Troutman (R), who took 36.04 percent (7,977 votes) compared to Matt Caldwell (R), who posted 30.04 percent (6,808 votes).

In voting for Citrus County Commission, Ron Kitchen (R) and Scott Carnahan (R) outdistanced their rival candidates. Kitchen bested Ruthie Schlaback in the race for District 2. Kitchen took 38.48 percent of the votes (8,589 votes) to Schlabach’s 28.89 percent (6,671 votes).

In the race for County Commissioner District 4, Scott Carnahan (R) won by 1,049 votes against former District 4 Commissioner Scott Allen Adams (R). The count was 52,36 percent (11,689 votes) for Carnahan, and 47.64 percent (10,610 votes).

Meanwhile, Sean Shaw was the top vote-getter in Citrus County was Sean Shaw (D), who took 69.99 percent (6,776).

County voters also preferred Nicole “Nikki” Fried (D) in the race for Commissioner of Agriculture by taking 57.46 percent of the vote (5,641 votes).

In the race for 5th Circuit Judge, Group for, Citrus County voters picked Don Barbee Jr. (non) by 51.89 percent of the vote (17,585 vote) to Edward C. Spaight’s (Non) 48.11 percent (16,305.

In the race for Citrus County School Board, District 5, the top spot went to incumbent Linda B. Powers (Non). She took 54.85 percent of the vote (18,812 votes).
