Citrus County deputies responded to 8801 East Wind Court in Floral City at 4:30 a.m. this morning after family told 911 dispatchers George Rogers, 36, was violently harming himself.

Deputies arrived at the residence to find Rogers to be extremely agitated and confrontational, the Sheriff’s Office said.

He then barricaded himself in the bathroom where he repeatedly cut his body with multiple objects, the CCSO said. Deputies were able to use a shield to enter the bathroom in an effort to stop Rogers from harming himself further so that they could help him.

The Sheriff’s Office said that Rogers showed incredible strength and resistance during this encounter, even though he was significantly injured by his own hands. Subsequently, Nature Coast Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and assisted CCSO deputies by sedating Rogers.

Rogers coded and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy on Rogers to determine cause and manner of death.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an independent investigation into his death.
