Thanks to the donations of generous community partners, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is now one-step closer to building their Law Enforcement Memorial for Citrus County’s fallen law enforcement officers.

Following the 2019 Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony on May 15 in Inverness, Jerry Orbino with Knights of Columbus Father James Hoge Assembly 1547, Warden Mike Quinn of CoreCivic, along with Jim Coburn from the National Association of Retired Law Enforcement Officers (NARLEO) presented three individual checks on behalf of their organizations to Sheriff Mike Prendergast for the memorial.

The Knights of Columbus donated $3,656, CoreCivic donated $1354.71, and NARLEO donated $500.

This memorial is a vision of our office to always represent and remember our fallen colleagues, whose lives were sadly lost in the line of duty. As sobering as the reason behind this memorial is, we will make it our duty to give this fitting tribute of dedicated, selfless service to our local heroes.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently in the initial phase of planning and developing the memorial to recognize and honor Citrus County’s own fallen heroes. The Law Enforcement Memorial is set to be constructed later this year and will be situated in front of the Sheriff’s Office Operations building in Inverness, FL. Construction of the memorial is estimated to take approximately six months. Once completed, the names of those who gave their lives while serving Citrus County will be forever memorialized in a local monument.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Posse, a 501(c)3 corporation,  is sponsoring this cause and accepting donations from the public. If you would like to contribute, donations can be made in any manner. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, located at 1 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. Inverness, FL 34450.

Donations are tax deductible. Questions can be directed to Major Elena Vitt at (352) 341-7402 or evitt@sheriffcitrus.org.
