OCALA, Fla. (March 1, 2018) — The College of Central Florida will host a talk about the integration of southern public libraries from Dr. Wayne Wiegand, retired Florida State University professor and writer, on Thursday, April 11, at 3 p.m. in the Webber Center, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Tickets are not required and entry is free.

Wiegand, who holds degrees from University of Wisconsin and Southern Illinois University, was honored as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Library of Congress’s John W. Kluge Center, researching a book on the history of the American public school library.

His book, “The Desegregation of Public Libraries in the Jim Crow South: Civil Rights and Local Activism,” was co-authored with his wife, Shirley A. Wiegand, and comes out this spring.  The book addresses the integration of southern public libraries and the willingness of local young black community members to take part in organized protests to ensure that libraries would become genuinely free to all citizens.
