Today, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) launched a public service billboard campaign against distracted driving, continuing the Sheriff’s Office’s successful “Just Drive, Citrus” efforts from 2018.

The CCSO and State Farm collaborated on a series of billboard artworks, ready to be displayed throughout the county. The message, simple – “Don’t Text and Drive”.

Reducing traffic accidents caused by distracted driving and supporting law enforcement’s outreach efforts in the public safety spectrum is the focus of this partnership. State Farms’ grant supports the implementation of public safety awareness campaigns and builds upon the existing infrastructure of programs the Sheriff’s Office already has in place, to better protect motorists and save lives.

The billboard exhibitions serve as a reminder, distracted driving is not worth the risks, or the potential consequences. The series of these public service billboards will run for a duration of 16 weeks. A total of four billboards with three uniquely prepared messages are positioned throughout Citrus County at the following locations:

  • SR 200 SS 1.9mi W/O CO 491 F/N – 1 in Hernando
  • US 19-98 ES 0.5mi N/O CO 490 F/S – 1 in Homosassa
  • SR 44 Gulf to Lakes NS 1.3mi E/O CO 491 F/W – 1 in Lecanto
  • US 41 Florida Ave WS 1.4mi S/O SR 44 F/S – 1 in Inverness

“We hope that these strategically placed billboard will provoke conversations within our community, heighten awareness and lead to more people taking action to end this unsafe practice,” said Sheriff Prendergast. “Distracted driving is dangerous and we need to change drivers’ bad habits instead of allowing those bad habits to change them. Totaling a vehicle or losing a precious life, it’s just not worth it – we promise.”
