BOCC supports female war memorial in Homosassa

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday gave its support for a proposed war memorial in honor of women who have served in the military.

The proposed memorial will be located in the area of the Old Homosassa War Memorial.

Mark Long, Old Homosassa Veterans Memorial Committee, said the new memorial will be paid for with private donations. And Bill Andrews, Treasurer for the organization, added that the land has been vacant for five years.

If the unanimous vote today of the Citrus County Commission is any indicator, plans to move veterans memorials from the front of the Historic Old Courthouse in Inverness aren't going anywhere.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to not go ahead with moving the memorials to the back of the courthouse, where some groups had lobbied for the landmarks to be relocated to.

Surprisingly, some representatives from the county's veterans groups said at the commission meeting that they hadn't even been invited to discussions that eventually led to calls to move the monuments.

Citrus County veterans and prominent community leaders are partnering in an effort to relocate the war memorial in Inverness.

On Dec. 3, 2013, local attorney Clark Stillwell addressed the Inverness City Council on behalf of the Citrus County Historical Society, representatives of the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and representatives of the City of Inverness.
