Mandatory garbage collection still struggling

Garbage collectionThe Citrus County Commission on Tuesday seemed to take a softer stand on the issue of mandatory garbage collection.
 
Discussion among commissioners ranged from topics about the possibility of using a regional landfill based on a study recently completed -- but deemed by Commission Chairman Scott Carnahan to be useless since the plan will not be used -- to space left in the county's landfill to flow control.

Apollo Beach woman drowns while scalloping in Crystal River

On Monday evening, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) contacted the Citrus County Sheriff's Office about a drowning that occurred earlier in the Gulf.

The CCSO was told that 47-year-old Tammy Barth and her husband Mark Barth, from Apollo Beach, had been scalloping in Crystal River all day.

Detectives investigate racial slur on Citrus Hills Home

This blurred-out racial slur was spray painted across one site of a home in Citrus Hills, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is investigating a case involving a racial slur spray-painted in large letters on the side of a home in Citrus Hills.

Deputies who responded to the call at 7:05 a.m. saw that the slur covered  the entire side of the home. A neighbor phoned the communications center, the CCSO said, thinking that the residents of the home were on vacation.

The homeowners, who are black, were in fact home. A neighborhood canvas was then performed, which yielded no results.

Citrus County's July unemployment rate at 6.2 percent

(Aug. 18, 2017) – The unemployment rate for the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion held at 5.3 percent in July, which was 1.1 percentage point lower than the region’s rate of 6.4 percent one year ago. Out of a labor force of 199,816, there were 10,557 unemployed.

Significantly, that’s 2,016 fewer unemployed and 4,555 more working than in July 2016.

Crystal River woman charged with animal cruelty

A Crystal River woman was arrested Monday night and charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Joi-Marie Richheimer, 45, of 8465 W. Gen Chennault Lane.

Animal Control Officers (ACO's) seized three dogs this past Sunday evening, two of which were in "very, very horrific condition," the Sheriff's Office said. A 9-pound Shih Tzu was found in the road wandering around the neighborhood. A good Samaritan held the dog to keep it safe, and waited for ACO's to arrive.
