Officials brief on nuclear plant decommissioning

Three Duke Energy Florida representatives on Tuesday gave an overview of the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant in Crystal River.

The presentation include Duke Energy's involvement with the community from Duke Public Relations specialist Amy Mangan, an overview of the process by Duke's Phyllis Dixon and an update by Duke representative Blair Wonderly of the decommissioning process going forward.

Commission selects Kenney as new chairman

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday selected Citrus County Commissioner John "JJ" Kenney as its new commission chairman.

Kenney's election was unanimous. He replaces Commissioner Joe Meek, whose chairmanship expired at the end of the Nov. 5 commission meeting.

First vice-chair is Commissioner Rebecca Bays. Second vice-chair is Commissioner Dennis Damato.

Hernando home destroyed in blaze

A Sunday evening fire destroyed a 640-square-foot rental home in Hernando.

No injuries were reported.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office, Division of Fire Rescue, was dispatched at 8:04 p.m. to the home at 65480 N. Sourgum Terrace.

A brief history of Hernando County

Around 1840, Fort DeSoto was established in present-day Hernando County in the northeast edge of present-day Brooksville to protect settlers in the area from Native Americans.

Fort DeSoto became a small community center, trading post, and way station on the route to Tampa. When settlement by the fort began around 1845, it was alternatively known as Pierceville.

Then encompassing a significantly larger area of west central Florida than it does today, Hernando County was officially established on February 27, 1843, two years prior to Florida's admission into the Union.

Levy County, Florida's 27th county, was formed March 10, 1845.

It was named in honor of David Levy Yulee, who is also the namesake of the town of Yulee in Nassau County.

Yulee, the founder of the Florida Railroad Company, was nicknamed "Father of Florida Railroads."

Yulee's company set out to build the first railroad in Florida connectingthe Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The first train successfully arrived in Cedar Key, on the Gulf coast, from Jacksonville on March 1, 1861.
