CCHB unanimously approves 'intent letter' to HCA

INVERNESS - The Citrus County Hospital Board of Trustees (CCHB) on Wednesday night voted to unanimously approve the Letter of Intent (LOI) to lease the Citrus Memorial Hospital to Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).

By doing so, the CCHB said, it sends a clear message to the Citrus Memorial Health Foundation that the CCHB is committed to closing this transaction and helping the hospital finally obtain financial stability.

Public's right to speak questioned at meetings

A small, but vocal, group of Citrus County residents asked the county commission on Tuesday to restore things to the way they were before the BOCC voted to change the order of "Open to the Public" comments at BOCC meetings.

The group has been lobbying commissioners during the past two commission meetings to modify an ordinance that governs public comment during governmental meetings which was modeled to comply with Senate Bill 50, passed by the Florida Legislature earlier this year.

County votes to transmit corridor plan to state

Despite objections by the Citrus County mining community and the Citrus County Mosquito Control Board, the county commission on Tuesday voted 4-1 to send the County Road 491 Economic Corridor Overlay plan to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO) for review and possible approval.

Voting against the transmittal of the plan was Commissioner Scott Adams, who said that the plan, which will call for new zoning rules, some of which could conceivably allow for high-density use, creates a system of "winners and losers."

Officials brief on nuclear plant decommissioning

Three Duke Energy Florida representatives on Tuesday gave an overview of the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant in Crystal River.

The presentation include Duke Energy's involvement with the community from Duke Public Relations specialist Amy Mangan, an overview of the process by Duke's Phyllis Dixon and an update by Duke representative Blair Wonderly of the decommissioning process going forward.

Commission selects Kenney as new chairman

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday selected Citrus County Commissioner John "JJ" Kenney as its new commission chairman.

Kenney's election was unanimous. He replaces Commissioner Joe Meek, whose chairmanship expired at the end of the Nov. 5 commission meeting.

First vice-chair is Commissioner Rebecca Bays. Second vice-chair is Commissioner Dennis Damato.
