Animal control seizes 65 dogs from elderly Homosassa couple

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office announced that on Monday Citrus County Sheriff Animal Control officers seized 65 dogs from an elderly couple in Homosassa.

The couple has been monitored regularly as dog breeders, the CCSO said, just barely meeting minimum standards to care for their dogs.

During this monitoring period, Animal Control was aware of 18 dogs. Dozens of dogs were kept hidden from law enforcement during checkups.

The League of Women Voters of Citrus County on Tuesday pitched the need for a solar energy co-op to the county commission, arguing that homeowners could save money by going rooftop solar.

Citrus County lowers joblessness to 4.8 percent for September

Jobs artThe Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) reported on Friday that Citrus County's jobless number for September 2017 has been lowered from 5.9 percent in August to 4.8 percent for September.

Citrus County still remains the fourth highest in the state behind Hendry County (8.6%),  Hardee County (6.0%) and Glades County (5.3%).

Even so, rates across the state's counties show a definite trend downward.

Floral City man shot after brandishing gun at deputies

Sheriff's StarThe Citrus County Sheriff's Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are sorting out what happened today when a Floral City man was shot by a CCSO deputy.
 
Deputies had been called to try to help the man, Douglas Veltman, 58, when Veltman produced a gun and was then shot by a deputy when Veltman refused to show his hands and put down the weapon.
