County employee places second in state's heavy equipment competition

Congratulations to Carl Ballard, who works as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Citrus County Solid Waste Division.

Ballard was able to achieve second place for heavy equipment operations in this year’s Florida Sunshine Chapter Road-E-O 2017.

Inverness updates City Capital Projects

Inverness Infantry Memorial is a special project to the community that will find its new home outside the west wing of City Hall at 212 W. Main St., Inverness.

The lifelike bronze soldier statutes will be placed upon a double-tiered granite pedestal that will be surrounded by a granite wall and benches.

Lighting, landscaping and flag mounts will round out an impactful display. The anticipated ribbon cutting will occur in January or February of 2018.

Springs activist Mercer honored at SWFWMD meeting

Phillis Rosetti-Mercer was presented with the Springs Community Partner award in memory of the late springs activist, Bob Mercer of Crystal River (SWFWMD photo on August 29, 2017).

The Governing Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District today recognized Bob Mercer, who passed away in January, for his passion and dedication to improving the Crystal River/Kings Bay spring system.

Mercer’s wife of many years, Phillis Rosetti-Mercer, accepted the Springs Community Partner Award in her husband’s memory.

“Bob would have loved this so much,” she said during the Governing Board presentation, as she wiped away tears.

Crystal River woman charged with animal cruelty

A Crystal River woman was arrested Monday night and charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Joi-Marie Richheimer, 45, of 8465 W. Gen Chennault Lane.

Animal Control Officers (ACO's) seized three dogs this past Sunday evening, two of which were in "very, very horrific condition," the Sheriff's Office said. A 9-pound Shih Tzu was found in the road wandering around the neighborhood. A good Samaritan held the dog to keep it safe, and waited for ACO's to arrive.

County positions itself for mandatory universal garbage collection

The Citrus County Commission at its Tuesday solid waste workshop unanimously agreed that it wants to go down the road toward mandatory universal garbage collection.
 
Citrus County Commissioner Ron Kitchen Jr. was the leading proponent for the commissioners to go that way, and had his own ideas about how it should be implemented. But Commissioner Kitchen did have a few caveats.
 

'Blessings' and 'Feed The Kids' programs supported by United Way

Inverness, FL (7/17/2017) –- Citrus County Harvest has been awarded $40,000 by United Way of Citrus County. It is the largest grant to be received by Harvest since the creation of their Blessings program in 2009.

“The United Way grant will help fund two programs in the 2017-2018 academic year,” said Grace Hengesbach, Harvest’s Executive Director.
