Donations sought for homeless, stray animals

Due to the impending impact of Hurricane Irma on Citrus County the Animal Shelter (Citrus County Animal Services) is anticipating an influx of homeless and stray animals.

Additional donations of critical items will be needed to care for animals and their comfort during the storm and during recovery efforts.

Below is a list of items needed:

Gov. Scott declares pre-Irma State of Emergency

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in the state as rapidly growing Hurricane Irma, now a Category 4 storm, is expected to make landfall later this week.

The state of emergency has been issued for all of Florida’s 67 counties. Scott said that the state would “prepare for the worst and hope for the best” as Irma is expected to hit the state around Friday.

The governor tweeted Monday that he urges “all Floridians to remain vigilant and stay alert to local weather and news and visit FLGetAPlan.com today to get prepared.”

Smoke alarms awaken resident just in time

Smoke AlarmWorking smoke alarms are credited with helping a Dunnellon resicent and her dog escape injury early Monday morning after a fire broke out in their home.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters on Monday were called to the scene of a residential home fire at 2:59 a.m. at 4171 West Ranchetta St. in Dunnellon.

Upon arrival, Engine 9 from Derosa found a double- wide manufactured home 50 percent involved in fire.

That phone call may be a scam

Scam Alert artThe Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Friday alerted residents that a scam that is active throughout the nation is making itself known here.

People are answering their phone because they either recognize the number on the caller ID or because it is simply a local number. Once they pick up the phone, the CCSO said, the call is either a sales call, a scam call or a simply harassing call.

Inverness updates City Capital Projects

Inverness Infantry Memorial is a special project to the community that will find its new home outside the west wing of City Hall at 212 W. Main St., Inverness.

The lifelike bronze soldier statutes will be placed upon a double-tiered granite pedestal that will be surrounded by a granite wall and benches.

Lighting, landscaping and flag mounts will round out an impactful display. The anticipated ribbon cutting will occur in January or February of 2018.
