Fort Island Gulf Beach Park reopens Oct. 1

The Division of Parks and Recreation is prepared to reopen the Fort Island Gulf Beach Park on Saturday, Oct. 1.  

The park received extensive damage due to Hurricane Hermine the first weekend of September and has been closed to the public since then.

Residents, businesses: Register for disaster assistance

Homeowners, renters and business owners in Citrus, Dixie, Hernando, Hillsborough, Leon, Levy, Pasco and Pinellas counties who were affected by Hurricane Hermine are urged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as they may be eligible for disaster assistance.

Drugs, guns, money seized in Citrus Springs search

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office Tactical Impact Unit Narcotics Division on Tuesday arrested a man in Citrus Springs after executing a search warrant at a home there.

The TIU served a search warrant at 9909 N. Cherry Lake Drive in Citrus Springs regarding a complaint of ongoing narcotics sales at the home.

Obama declares county disaster area

President Barak Obama has signed the disaster declaration which provides federal disaster assistance to the state of Florida to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in the area affected by Hurricane Hermine during the period of Aug. 31 to Sept. 11, 2016.

The Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management will notify the community regarding the next steps sometime next week or possibly sooner.

Lecanto veterans clinic to remain open under lease

There has been a rumor in the community about a perceived plan by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs to consolidate services provided by the VA in Gainesville, the VA facility in The Villages and the Lecanto VA clinic, which some have feared could possibly result in the closure of the Lecanto clinc.

County passes final 2016-17 budget

The Citrus County Commission on Monday passed the budget for 2016-17 by a 3-2 vote.

Voting against the tentative budget were commissioners Dennis Damato and Scott Adams.

Councilman calls for equity in law enforcement fees

Crystal River Councilman Andy Houston on Monday appeared before the Citrus County Commission calling for equity in law enforcement fees.

Animal activists vent at Citrus BOCC meeting

Animal activists took their complaints about the Citrus County Animal Shelter in Inverness and it's former director to the Citrus County Commission chambers on Monday.

It wasn't pretty to watch, either, as the activists vented about the shelter in a variety of ways, which included harsh words for Tobey Phillips, a longtime Citrus County employee who was appointed to the shelter as its director.

Citrus Parks & Rec concert series

Citrus County Parks and Recreation is happy to announce their 2016/2017 Concert series running from November 12, 2016 to March 24, 2017.

The series opens Saturday Nov. 12 with The Alter Eagles doing a Tribute to The Eagles. The performance will be at the Citrus Springs Community Center, 1570 West Citrus Springs Blvd, Citrus Springs, FL. Tickets are $15 per person with auditorium-style seating.

As we have pointed out in an earlier story, there is some disagreement among Citrus County Commissioners about the upcoming budget finalization on Sept. 27, 2016.
