Damato honored for springs efforts

Citrus County Commissioner Dennis Damato

Citrus County Commissioner Dennis Damato was recently recognized by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) Governing Board for his service on the Springs Coast Steering Committee.

Damato serves as the representative for Citrus County on the Steering Committee, which was formed by SWFWMD in 2014 to address management of spring systems within the district.

2 die in Saturday Lecanto crash

Two people died following a crash in Lecanto on Saturday night on State Road 44 west of Citrus County Road 491.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that a Jeep SUV entered the median for unknown reason on Lecanto Highway and overturned. The driver, Trevor William Clements, 22, of Citrus Springs, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Renowned composer's suspected killers in custody

Darren Decker, 41, and Jessica Baker, 44, both of Ocala

Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy announced today that two suspects are in custody in connection with the burglary trend which recently swept through several central Florida counties.

These two suspects, who are being held on burglary charges in Sumter County, are also the suspects in the murder of Don "Terry" Plumeri which occurred on March 31.

Currently, the suspects Darren Decker, 41, of Ocala and Jessica Baker, 44, of Ocala, are in custody in Sumter County on a no-bond charge.

Traffic stop 'urns' driver drug charges

A traffic stop often has a surprise ending, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office recently learned.

While on patrol on Monday, deputies noticed a driver who wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Deputies pulled over Eric Roscoe Middleton, 38, of 11240 N. Northwood Drive #119 in Inglis to tell him about the traffic infraction. But what deputies found was a cooperative driver that went above and beyond cooperation with law enforcement.

Missing/runaway teen

On March 29, 2016, Brittany Hawes was reported as a missing/runaway juvenile to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

Brittany is a Caucasian female, 5’6”, 150 pounds, with long blonde hair, and blue eyes. Brittany may be with family in the area of Ocala or Bradenton, Fla.
