Floral City bank robbed

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is investigating a bank robbery that occurred this afternoon at Brannen Bank in Floral City.

The CCSO said that just before 4 p.m. a female suspect entered the bank and spoke to employees about opening an account.

When she was told that the bank was closing, the Sheriff's Office reported, she showed a firearm and placed the employees in the vault. She took an undisclosed amount of cash, walked out of the bank and drove off in a tan Chrysler minivan with a Florida license plate.

Small plane crashes into Inverness home

Only the 75-year-old pilot of this plane was injured in this crash in Inverness. His injuries were described as minor.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said today that a small plane crashed into a house in Inverness.

The only injuries sustained were to the pilot, whose injuries were said to be minor.

The Citrus County 911 dispatch center received a call at about 3:45 p.m. that the plane crashed into the house off Eden Drive in Inverness. Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue responded to 743 Carnegie Drive.

CCSO communications officer dies in public pool

A Citrus County Sheriff's Office Communications Officer died while swimming laps in a Citrus Hills pool.

According to the CCSO, Kurt Lynn, 44, worked at the Emergency Operations Center.

He died while swimming at the recreation facility at Terra Vista in Citrus Hills, the CCSO said.  Deputies on scene believe that he suffered an undetermined medical event that caused him to drown.

A wanted man out of Georgia, suspected of murder and rape, has led investigators to Citrus County - and to his capture.

After a lengthy forensic investigation, the Cobb County Police Department in Georgia identified the man linked to a 1991 homicide and another rape case as George Gengarelly, 63, who was known to live in Marion County.

Woman accused of fraud in breast cancer claim

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said today that a Hernando woman has been charged with organized fraud, after her breast cancer diagnosis claim proved to be false.

The woman, Kelly Johanneson, 36, of 1795 N. Cloverdale Terrace, Hernando, is said to have engaged in what the Sheriff's Office said was "an unusual case of lies and deceit."

County businessman faces sexual battery charge

A well-known Citrus County businessman has been implicated in a March 6 incident in which an intoxicated woman alleges he sexually battered her while she was passed out.

The defendant has been identified as Shannon Dain Heathcock, 45, of 7800 E. Gospel Island Road in Inverness, who is self-employed and is owner of Dash Transport Inc., which provides medical transport to some Citrus County residents.

According to the arrest report, the victim was a 33-year-old Inverness woman.

Homeless man who killed mother sentenced to life

A man who was charged and tried for killing his mother in a homeless camp in Crystal River on April 4, 2014 was sentenced today to life in prison without parole.

Benjamin Dick choked and stabbed his mother, killing her and then burying her body in a shallow grave near a homeless camp in Crystal River. He also got into an argument and stabbed his brother, but did not kill him.

Homosassa arrest warrant uncovers grow house

A man wanted on unrelated charges was found to have been operating a marijuana grow house (March 9, 2015)

Early this morning, Citrus County Sheriff's Office patrol deputies responded to South Colonial Avenue in Homosassa in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant on an unrelated subject.

When they arrived at the door of a small 18-foot travel trailer on the property, deputies spotted buckets of potting soil which contained marijuana stalks.

And outside the trailer's door, deputies also found a small marijuana plant.

Early Wednesday morning, members of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office Tactical Impact Unit (TIU) executed a search warrant at 4109 South Skylark Terrace in Homosassa.

The multiple living quarters on the property made this operation more challenging, so the SWAT team first secured the area before the residence was searched.
